Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s durable commitment to United Nations Peace Missions, urging the international community to adapt the UN operations to face evolution global challenges.
In a message on the United Nations International Day for the Peace of the United Nations, he stressed that more than 235,000 Pakistani troops have served in 48 UN missions in the last seven decades.
A total of 181 Pakistani peace forces have lost their lives in the fulfillment of duty.
“This day provides an appropriate opportunity to evaluate the challenges facing the UN peacealous forces, such as the increase of unilateralism, financial limitations, growing threats to the security of UN peace maintenance, wrong information campaigns aimed at UN peace operations and the impacts of emerging technologies,” he said.
Prime Minister Shehbaz asked for an increase in international efforts to support the safety and operational effectiveness of peace maintenance forces worldwide.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also urged a stronger support for the group of United Nations military observers in India and Pakistan (UNMogip), which monitors the high fire along the control line in the territory disputed by Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Prime Minister Shehbaz said that recent developments in southern Asia reinforced the urgency of solving the problem of Kashmir in line with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the will of the People of Cashmiro.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ishaq Dar, echoed the feelings of the Prime Minister, pointing out that the Maintenance of the UN Peace remains one of the most reliable and profitable means to preserve global peace.
He requested technological innovation and strengthened regional associations to improve future operations.
Pakistan and the Republic of Korea co-organized the United Nations Ministerial Meeting for the Maintenance of Peace in Islamabad from April 15 to 16, 2025, with a theme “towards a safer and more effective peace maintenance: taking advantage of the technology and integrated approaches.”
