Pakistan signs the UNClos Agreement on Marina Biodiversity in New York


Pakistan signed a pact with the United Nations on Monday agreed to conserve marine biodiversity in areas beyond the national jurisdiction, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Pakistan Senator, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, signed an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of areas beyond the National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday.

“The signing of the BBNJ agreement is reflected in Pakistan’s continuous commitment to multilateral cooperation and with the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond the national jurisdiction,” said the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X (previously Twitter).

Early in the day, the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, praised the initiatives and leadership of Pakistan in the UN Security Council during a meeting with DAR.

Give Pakistan’s unavoidable commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations central role to address global challenges. He assured the UN Secretary General of the continuous approach of Islamabad in improving UN capacity in conflict resolution, promoting sustainable development and defending fundamental human rights worldwide.

Guterres praised the “strong role” and the “principles of principles” of Pakistan in the Security Council and welcomed his leadership during high -level commitments.

GAR highlighted Pakistan’s constant dedication to the principles of the UN Charter, especially the need to advance peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

He cited the recent initiatives of Pakistan, including a high level debate on multilateralism and the peaceful dispute solution, and the call for a session on non -office cooperation. Both events were held under the presidency of the Pakistan Council for July 2025.

During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister raised several issues of national and regional concern. These included the current dispute over Jammu and Kashmir, the alleged violations of India of the Treaty of the Water of the Indo, and the cases of terrorism within Pakistan supposedly sponsored from abroad.

He reiterated Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir’s problem must be resolved in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. He welcomed the recent efforts of the Secretary General to descalize tensions between Pakistan and India.

The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed Pakistan’s firm support to a sovereign Palestinian state, a high immediate fire in Gaza and complete opposition to Israel’s annexation plans in the West Bank.

The two parties discussed the next International High Level Conference on the Pacific Settlement of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the solution of two states, which will be held in New York next week. Both agreed that the conference must lead to significant results.

He also praised the Un80 initiative of the Secretary General, who marked the next 80 anniversary of the UN, and said he provided a critical opportunity to strengthen the three fundamental pillars of the UN: international peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

He also informed Gutterres about Pakistan’s steps to promote regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth through international associations.
