Pakistan urges dialogue to reduce tensions on Korean Peninsula

Expressing concern over the latest ballistic missile launch by North Korea, Pakistan has called for diplomatic engagement and dialogue to address the challenges facing the Korean Peninsula.

“We strongly support calls for the revival of talks between relevant parties,” Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the U.N. Security Council, which met two days after Korea North to fire what Pyongyang described as a new type of hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) loaded with a hypersonic glide vehicle.

Ambassador Akram described these developments as detrimental to regional and international peace and security.

Pakistan, he said, supports the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and global non-proliferation and disarmament goals.

“Provocations such as missile tests, on the one hand, and coercive actions and threats, on the other, must be put to an end,” the Pakistani envoy said.

“Pakistan opposes any new nuclear weapons tests in Korea or anywhere else.”

In this regard, Ambassador Akram called on all parties to exercise restraint and not escalate existing tensions, urging the Security Council to consider adopting some confidence-building measures by the parties to reduce tensions.

Pakistan, he added, remains committed to working within the framework established by United Nations resolutions to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

“We hope that the Security Council will find ways to revive dialogue and play its rightful role in reducing tensions and threats to peace and security in the region.

Syria

Pakistan has called for political inclusion and representative governance in “brotherly” Syria following the overthrow of the Assad regime exactly a month ago, saying the process should be Syrian-led, Syrian-owned and supported by the United Nations. United.
