Sky watchers across Pakistan are witnessing a breathtaking view of the largest supermoon of the year, known as the ‘Super Beaver Moon’, as the celestial event lights up the night sky with exceptional brightness.

According to a spokesperson for the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), this is the second of three supermoons that will appear this year. The phenomenon stands out for its extraordinary increase in both size and brightness compared to a normal full moon.

A supermoon occurs when the moon, during its full phase, reaches the closest point to the Earth in its orbit. As a result, it appears larger and much brighter than usual.

The spokesperson stated that during the supermoon, the distance between the Earth and the Moon is reduced to approximately 221,817 miles, making the Moon appear up to 9.7% larger and 16% brighter than average.

Experts point out that this is the second supermoon of the year and the next and last one is expected in December. Astronomers have also identified this event as the ‘Beaver Supermoon’, which is predicted to be the largest and brightest lunar display of 2025.

At the beginning of October 7, the first supermoon of 2025 illuminated the night sky of Pakistan.

Perigee, the Moon’s closest approach to Earth, occurred at 7 pm Coordinated Universal Time on October 6, equivalent to 12 am PST on October 7. The SUPARCO official added that the full moon phase occurred at 8:47 pm PST, and since both events occurred within a few hours of each other, it “qualified as a supermoon.”

Typically, a supermoon appears up to 14% larger and almost 30% brighter than a typical full moon.
