Abu Dhabi: Pakistan agricultural innovation received global recognition such as Dr. Ghulam Sarwar Markhand, a distinguished Pakistani researcher from Shah Latif Khairpur Sindh University, was honored with the prestigious Khalifa International Palm prize and agricultural innovation in the category of “influential figure” during a great ceremony in the Emirates of Palace, Abu Dhhabi.
The event, attended by representatives from 66 countries for two days, celebrated global achievements in sustainable agriculture and innovation. The recognition of Dr. Markhand highlights Pakistan’s contribution to global scientific research in agriculture.
Talking to PakGazette News, the researcher proudly declared that it was a great honor to receive the prize for his contributions to Date Palm Research.
He shared that more than 180 researchers and academics from 28 countries presented their work for the category of “influential figure”, with Pakistan and Egypt winning the main awards in this category.
Pakistan-Uae Mou
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed during the ceremony to organize the second Palm Date Palm Festival of Pakistan in Pakistan.
The Mou was signed by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, representing Pakistan, and the general secretary of the Khalifa International Award, Dr. Abdelauahhab Zaid.

The MOU is aimed at promoting palm cultivation of the date and sustainable agricultural practices. It seeks to promote innovation and the exchange of knowledge between Pakistan and the EAU, strengthening their agricultural collaboration.
Hussain emphasized the importance of Pakistan-Ea’s collaboration, stating: “This recognition of the MOU and Dr. Markhand reflect Pakistan’s commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainable practices. Together, we can address global challenges such as food security and climate change.”
While arguing the dates production potential in Pakistan, Hussain said that the MOU will help improve date production and introduce new varieties in the country. He expressed the hope that the collaboration of Pakistan-UAE leads to an increase in exports of Pakistan date.
Sheikh Nahayan, Recognized Tirmizi Ambassador
The Minister of Tolerance and coexistence of the EAU, Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, praised the contributions of the winners of the awards in the advance of agricultural innovation.
The Pakistan ambassador to the EAU, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, was also recognized for his efforts to strengthen agricultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The event, organized under the sponsorship of the Vice President of the EAU and vice president of Prime Minister Sheikh Manso Bin Zayed al Nahyan, concluded with the international figures that contribute to the growth of the dating palm sector and global agriculture.
