Two Pakistani sisters studying in the United Kingdom have drowned in a tragic incident in the Eryri National Park, Wales del Norte, which caused a large amount of pain and demands greater clarity of the authorities.
Hajra Zahid, 29, and Halema Zahid, 25, both postgraduate students in international businesses at Chester University, were retired from Watkin’s pools in the Nant Gwynant area last week.
The sisters, originally from Kahuta near Rawalpindi, had arrived in the United Kingdom four months ago and resided in Maltby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
An initial research hearing held at the Dafydd Orwig Chamber in Cernarfon confirmed that both women died due to drowning, as reported by BBC.
The incident occurred on June 11, when North Wales Police received reports that a woman had been taken from the water and that another was still submerged. Both were declared dead at the scene shortly before midnight.
The viceness of the University of Chester, Professor Eunice Simmons expressed a deep pain, saying that the sisters had “touched the lives of many” within the university community.
The Pakistani community in the United Kingdom has also reacted with the shock, with vigils and community leaders who demand transparency around the circumstances of death.
The funerary prayers of women were held in northern England on Tuesday, and their bodies were transferred back to Pakistan on Wednesday.
Hajra Zahid was married and leaves two young children, six and three.
A local journalist shared her husband’s reaction in X (previously Twitter), who had requested greater investigation by the United Kingdom government in the tragedy.

The tragedy has also revived the scrutiny about security measures on the Watkin road, a popular route but remote to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The authorities continue to urge caution for those who visit the mountain pools, particularly late in the day.
The investigation has been postponed as investigations continue.
