Patrick Mahomes’ knee surgery showed more than just a torn ACL

It appears Patrick Mahomes’ season-ending knee injury is worse than initially imagined after successful surgery Monday.

However, the Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar quarterback should still be on the same recovery timeline to return to the field next year.

Mahomes reportedly tore his LCL and ACL, according to NFL Network. Separated ligaments may complicate recovery, but the report adds that this does not necessarily mean Mahomes’ rehabilitation will last more than nine months.

The Chiefs announced Monday that Mahomes, their 30-year-old franchise quarterback, immediately underwent surgery in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper to repair torn ligaments.

The announcement did not mention any other torn ligaments, although reporters tried to ask Andy Reid if there was anything else before the surgery.

“It’s just what they posted,” Reid said, regarding his team’s announcement. “We try not to hide too much from you, right? It’s not our game. I try to keep it clear to you, so that’s the information they had and they released it to you.”

Reid was also asked if Mahomes was going to get a second opinion on his injury, although the immediate surgery shows he and the team wanted it done as quickly as possible to begin the recovery process.

That process will be a long one for Mahomes, but Reid is confident his quarterback will do what is necessary to ensure he doesn’t miss any time next season.

“I know the rehab process and I’m sure he’s going to get in there, and I know he’s going to come out of this victorious,” Reid said. “As we progress here, we are discovering a lot about our team. Some of the young players are having opportunities to play, we are going to finish this season strong and with effort.”

After Mahomes’ injury in the fourth quarter, backup Gardner Minshew was unable to get the offense into field goal range for Harrison Butker to attempt a potential field goal that would force overtime. With the 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention.

It will be the first time since 2014 that the Chiefs have not been in the playoffs, and many consider it the end of the “dynasty” that has made three consecutive appearances in the Super Bowl, winning two of them before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles last year.

The Chiefs will evaluate their roster over the next three games, which includes Minshew starting the rest of the center. But all eyes will be focused on Mahomes this offseason, as it’s a bitter end to a rollercoaster season for Kansas City.
