Paul McCartney finally spoke out about the painful reality behind the Beatles’ breakup.

In his new book, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run (out November 4), the former Beatle revealed how the end of the iconic band left him devastated.

As revealed by The Guardian, Paul admitted: “In many ways, he was dead…”

“A 27-year-old on the verge of becoming a former Beatle, drowning in a sea of legal and personal disputes that were draining my energy, and in need of a complete life change,” he wrote, according to the outlet.

He added that he wondered if he would ever be able to put the “incredible decade” with the Beatles behind him.

Notably, this confession comes as Paul McCartney revisits his infamous “Paul is Dead” conspiracy, rumors from the 1960s that claimed he had been dead and been replaced by a lookalike.

While the musician admitted that he laughed all the time, he now admits that the phrase wasn’t entirely wrong.

Additionally, Paul found healing by escaping to a quiet farm in Scotland with his wife Linda. “For the first time in years, I felt free, suddenly leading and directing my own life,” he wrote.

The Beatles, including members Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, disbanded in 1970.
