- OpenAI and PayPal reveal major new partnership
- ChatGPT users will soon be able to buy and sell within the platform
- “Buy with PayPal” button offers quick purchases to ChatGPT users
PayPal buyers and sellers will soon be able to complete their transactions through ChatGPT thanks to a new agreement with OpenAI.
The e-commerce platform has announced that it will adopt Agent Commerce Protocol (ACP) to expand payments and commerce on ChatGPT, and PayPal merchants will be able to sign up today.
The move will soon allow millions of ChatGPT users to make payments without leaving the platform via the “Buy with PayPal” button, opening up huge new potential markets for small businesses around the world.
From chat to payment
The partnership will allow PayPal’s global network of merchants to connect to OpenAI, meaning they will be able to showcase their products and services to buyers.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT every week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and more than 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, president and CEO of PayPal.
“By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the agent commerce protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout with just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”
Sellers won’t necessarily need to sign up for ChatGPT, PayPal noted, as it will take care of things like merchant routing, payment validation, and other payment processing in the background.
However, the deal will allow PayPal’s 24,000 employees to gain access to ChatGPT Enterprise, and for developers to gain access to OpenAI’s Codex platform and use OpenAI APIs across the board.
OpenAI also recently announced similar e-commerce deals with Shopify and Etsy, as well as a major partnership with Walmart, as it looks to take a central role in helping users buy and sell online.
