Assassin’s Creed Shadows Voice actor Tongayi Chirisa has spoken about the reception to his performance as the samurai protagonist of the hit video game, Yasuke.
Speaking at an event held to celebrate the game’s first anniversary and its inclusion in the ongoing Samurai exhibition at the British Museum, Chirisa revealed that he was completely new to gaming when he took on the role.
“It’s a world I wasn’t aware of,” he said. “I didn’t know that video games were more important than movies and television.”

He went on to add that he quickly had his “eyes opened to the magnitude” of the assassin’s creed franchise in his subsequent conversations with others. “When people told me ‘this is huge,’ I thought ‘how is that possible?'” he joked. “If there are more people playing than there are watching movies, it makes sense.”
The actor detailed some of his own online research into the historical figure of Yasuke and also had high praise for the development team’s handling of the character’s overall arc, as well as that of his other protagonist, the fictional shinobi Naoe.
“They did an incredible job of balancing the emotional tone and the historical facts,” he said. “Allowing ourselves to walk that path in a personal and authentic way, and then just making it our own.”
Assassin’s Creed Shadows It is currently available for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series Awaji’s Clawsand a limited-time Attack on Titan crossover.
The British Museum’s Samurai exhibition, which includes some images from the game, will be open until May 4, 2026. You can buy tickets through the museum’s website.
