A scrap between the players of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night extended to fans and led to multiple ejections.

The incident occurred in the second quarter with approximately 8:36 remaining in the first half. The striker of the Pistons Ron Holland II slapped the ball by the hand of the T’wolves Naz Reid striker after he committed a foul. Reid moved his finger to Holland while talking to him, and it was from there.

T’wolves Donte Divinnzo’s guard entered between the players and grabbed the Holland shirt when the group moved towards the fans sitting near the baseline. The chief coach of the Pistons, JB BickerStaff and the chief coach of T’wolves, Chris Finch, were on the court trying to cool the tensions.

As the players separated, the assistant coach of Minnesota, Pablo Prigioni and BickerStaff, began to shout at each other and had to separate.

“Obviously, things went too far,” BickerStaff told journalists. “But what you see is that the boys take care of each other, boys who try to protect each other, boys who try to have their backs … those are not negotiable in our costumes.”

Five players and two coaches were expelled from the game, including BickerStaff, Holland, Reid, Divinzzo, Prigioni, the guard of the Pistons Marcus Sasser and the Isaiah Stewart center. The game itself had 12 technical offenses, the greatest amount in an NBA game since March 23, 2005, according to Optastats.

“I thought before the game was too physical,” said Finch. “It’s unfortunate, but we knew they were a super physique team. They hit you, they hold you, everything you want your physical teams to do. But I thought it reached a point where players were going to take the matter in their own hands. You never want that.”
