Pluribus Episode 6 is now available on Apple TV, and amid its various talking points, viewers have expressed their surprise and delight at what some have dubbed the “cameo of the year.”
Titled ‘HDP’, the latest episode of the Apple TV Original features a completely unexpected appearance from a big-name star. And, if his cameo wasn’t surprising enough, it turns out his scene-stealing role was foreshadowed weeks ago.
Wait, is that John Cena in episode 6 of Pluribus?
Yeah! About 19 minutes later Pluribus‘In the last entry, Carol is shown a video that offers an explanation of what Carol, surprised, found in Pluribus Final scene of episode 5. You can read more about that horrible discovery in this Pluribus Semi-summary article of episode 6.
Anyway, as taping begins, none other than beloved wrestler-turned-actor John Cena suddenly appears on screen. What follows is a nearly three-minute long monologue in which Cena, who, like 99.99% of humanity, was not immune to the virus that caused The Joining, tells Carol some important details about the aforementioned discovery.
As expected, Apple TV viewers have flocked to social media platforms, including X/Twitter and other places like the ResetEra and r/Pluribus forums, to offer their reactions to Cena’s wild cameo.
“I love unexpected celebrity cameos,” Redditor ialo00130 wrote, before adding, “This one left me baffled for a few seconds before laughter broke out.” On ResetEra, user dphrygian said that “John Cena’s cameo was an amazing choice,” while Dalek, a frequent user of the forum, simply wrote “Holy shit, this cameo.”
Meanwhile, some people, who are also fans of Cena’s more notable role as Peacemaker in the DC Universe (DCU) and the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, had fun tying his appearance on one of Apple TV’s best shows to his role in said comic book franchises.
“Man, they got Peacemaker,” wrote ResetEra user CM_Ace, while Redditor this_was_hard_to_do said, “someone needs to edit the [Peacemaker] season 2 intro right after that line” in response to jboosmeezy commenting that the actor said “we’re John Cena” as part of his opening tactic.
Interestingly, Cena actually foreshadowed his appearance on the sci-fi mystery drama weeks earlier.
In late November, Cena uploaded an image of Rhea Seahorn’s star from his pilot episode to Instagram. The photo was not accompanied by a caption, which generated numerous responses from his followers about the meaning behind said photograph. Well, now we have our answer.
Speaking on the latest episode of the official Pluribus podcast, showrunner Vince Gilligan also revealed how the cameo came about.
Bottom line: Cena filmed it on a rare day off, cut out his multi-page monologue in his first take (Gilligan asked for two more, so he’d have more takes to choose from), and before parting ways, told Gilligan that he couldn’t wait to watch the episode so Cena could understand what he’d just rambled on about.
With Cena joining Better call Saul star Patrick Fabian in the Pluribus list of cameos, some are now wondering who will be the next famous face to appear. Until now, I would have said that someone from Breaking Bad but, after Cena’s wild appearance, I’ll take anyone at this point.
