Pluribus Episode 7 arrived on Apple TV and, although it does not reveal anything new about The Others and/or The Joining, it is still a very significant chapter.
Titled ‘The Gap’, Pluribus‘The last entry divides its time between the protagonist Carol and Manousos. I theorized that a team was in play as a result of Pluribus episode 6 and, despite what happens to them – and, in particular, Manousos – in ‘The Gap’, I have even more confidence that their paths will cross soon.
Does Manousos die in episode 7 of Pluribus?
No. Well, we don’t know if he survives the life-threatening injuries he suffers in ‘The Gap’. However, considering he’s been positioned as a major character in the sci-fi mystery drama so far, it would be a disappointing end to his time on the show if he is killed off.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The last episode of the Apple TV series does not reunite us with Manousos, who is on a mission to locate Carol, until a third of its duration has passed. And, for the next 10 minutes, we simply watch Manousos’ travels across the country as he learns English, via a cassette tape language course, so that he can communicate with Carol once they finally meet.
Finally, you reach a point your trusty convertible can’t pass: the Darien Gap, a dense and dangerous 100-kilometer-wide rainforest that bridges, well, the gap between Colombia and Panama. There, he is greeted by a small group of The Others, who implore Manousos not to attempt to walk through the remote and treacherous jungle.
However, if we’ve learned anything about the main supporting characters of one of Apple TV’s best shows, it’s that he’s nothing if not stubborn. So, Manousos ignores the Others’ plea and continues his search to finally meet Carol.
As expected, things soon go wrong. Slipping on a rock, Manousos falls backwards and impales himself on a Chunga palm tree, whose bark is covered in 20 cm long spikes filled with bacteria. As The Others previously warned, even the slightest cut can lead to a deadly infection. Being stabbed by numerous thorns, then, is a recipe for disaster.
Manousos tries to burn off the infection from the wounds on his back with his axe, which he heats in the fire that same night. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop his condition from getting worse. The next day, delirious from the infection and physically exhausted by his efforts, a weakened Manousos collapses.
However, just when all hope seems lost, The Others, whom Manousos has refused to receive since we met him, come to his aid. Rescue workers arrive at the scene by helicopter, and while we don’t see them airlift him to safety, it’s safe to assume they will do so successfully.
The big question now is: where is Manousos? Since one of the Others told him they would be happy to fly him to New Mexico so he can meet Carol in person, my best guess is that they took him to a hospital in Albuquerque. If I’m right, we may be aware that the duo will finally come together in episode 8 or the finale of this season.
Does Carol try to commit suicide in the seventh episode of Pluribus?
In truth, things aren’t looking so good for Carol either.
Encouraged by the knowledge that The Others can’t turn her into one of them without a) acquiring her stem cells and b) doing so with her consent, Carol begins to live life to the fullest once again. In fact, now that she knows she’s not living on borrowed time as one of the 13 immune people left alive before The Joined found a way to force her to join them, Carol begins to indulge in all of life’s frivolities.
At least for a while. After the Handsome section of ‘The Gap’ ends, the story progresses 34 days before we meet a depressed Carol. Sitting in front of her house, beer in hand and surrounded by fireworks that Carol programmed to go off intermittently, she is clearly struggling. Heck, Carol is apparently even preparing to hit herself when one of said fireworks is positioned to shoot directly at her. Cue an extremely close encounter when it zooms past your face before exploding and setting the roof of a neighboring house on fire.
The next day, we see Carol head to her local hardware store to grab a paint roller and a large tub of white paint, and then use them to write something on the asphalt of her cul-de-sac.
As the image above shows, Carol paints the words “come back.” The reason? Even the most misanthropic person in the world misses human interaction in real life. Cue a now-recovered Zosia appearing in Carol’s driveway, and after a somewhat awkward confrontation, an emotionally vulnerable Carol falls into Zosia’s arms as she fights back tears.
The final scene of episode 7 raises numerous questions. Is this the end of The Others’ self-imposed breakup with Carol? Is Carol finally ready to work and live with them? Has Zosia really forgiven Carol for almost killing her in Pluribus episode 4? And will the status quo change again if (or, rather, when) Carol and Manousos finally meet? Let’s hope all these queries will be answered when episodes 8 and 9 arrive on one of the best streaming services in the world.
