PM launches 10 million digital wallets for bisp beneficiaries

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched 10 million digital wallets on Monday for beneficiaries of the Benazir Revenue Support Program (BISP), describing the movement as a “historical milestone” in Pakistan’s impulse towards transparency, financial inclusion and an economy without cash.

With a symbolic touch of La Palma, the prime minister inaugurated the system in the presence of federal ministers, Bisp officials and international partners, including GIZ, Radio Pakistan reported.

He congratulated the president of Bisp, Senator Rubina Khalid and the institutions associated with the “historical decision that will safeguard genuine receptors and protect them from undue difficulties.”

“The digital wallet system is in its true sense blessed by the soul of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, since it empowers the beneficiaries with safe, transparent and direct access to financial assistance,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz.

He described Bisp as a “great initiative for the relief of poverty and employment generation,” emphasizing that more efforts were needed to expand its impact.

The prime minister described the launch “a great leap into an economy without effective” and recalled that during Ramazan, 78 percent of the help package was digitally disbursed despite skepticism and the resistance of the interests created.

“Transactions without effective are the pressing requirement of our times. They save time, end corruption and provide efficiency, helping Pakistan progress rapidly,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz added that he had personally presided over multiple meetings about digitalization despite indifferent indifferent “attitudes and boredom” and emphasized his commitment to transform the government, businesses and personal transactions into digital channels.

He urged Bisp leadership to link support with education and health conditionalities. “If a family is receiving assistance, it must be linked to the condition that all children of that home attend school. Similarly, health initiatives must be linked to BISP support. Only then will this program become a real legacy that benefits millions of children,” he said.

Premier also asked to reduce the current implementation cycle from eight to ten months to four months and paid tribute to the interested parties, including the State Bank of Pakistan, the TU Ministry, local banks and development partners. “We are not only disbursing help, we are raising an army of architects and workers to build the nation,” he added.

Previously, Bisp’s federal secretary, Amir Ali Ahmed, said a high -level committee had formed to guarantee transparency and ease of access. “After today’s launch, 10 million digital wallets will be developed using the CNIC of the beneficiaries, backed by a biometric verification system to avoid identity theft,” he said.

He added that 10 million free SIM cards would also be distributed, with the first phase in progress in Hyderabad, Sukkur and Rahim Yar Khan.

The president of Bisp, Senator Rubina Khalid, described the launch as an “important and historical milestone” and said that the program that supports more than 10 million families “not only financial assistance is a path to social and economic empowerment.”

He pointed out that linking the benefits with women’s CNIC gave them recognition in the national database and said that new wallets would be complemented with digital literacy programs for women who are not familiar with technology.

Senator Rubina stressed that Bisp continued the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for the empowerment of women, carried out by President Asif Ali Zardari and now “standing out more under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz has repeatedly emphasized the importance of a digital economy without effective. Last week, at a meeting, he said that the government is prioritizing efforts to digitize Pakistan’s economy and change financial transactions to a system without cash.

While presiding a review meeting on the economy without cash in Islamabad, it ordered the main provincial secretaries to fully cooperate with the federal government to expand the RAST digital payment system at the level of the district.

Sharif expressed his satisfaction with the progress made towards an economy without cash and the development of digital financial systems.

The officials reported the meeting that Pakistan will build digital public infrastructure to provide each citizen with a digital identification, integrating national identity cards, biometry and mobile numbers. These ID will allow safe and efficient payments.

The informative session added that provincial governments have progressed in the linking of public and public government payments with the RAST system.

The authorities also reported the meeting that federal development agencies have granted the right of step to fiber connectivity, while discussions with Pakistan Railways and the national road authority are underway to expand digital infrastructure.
