Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination that begins the immediate preparations for the 2026 monzón season and presented a comprehensive plan for the action of climate resilience, in two weeks, which must address the growing vulnerability of Pakistan to climate change, including increasingly intense rain and floods.
The Prime Minister presided over a high -level review meeting here to assess the damage caused by recent rains and recent floods, as well as continuous rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts throughout the country, said a press release from the Prime Minister’s office.
Prime Minister Shehbaz declared that the rehabilitation of citizens affected by floods was a superior national priority. He directed the authorities to guarantee full preparation in areas adjacent to the Southern River of Pakistan, which remain vulnerable to floods.
He stressed that the federal government is fully prepared to support provincial governments in all aspects of relief and rehabilitation.
The prime minister emphasized the need for real time monitoring of evacuation and help operations to ensure that timely assistance reaches those in need. He instructed the establishment of a special committee to facilitate financial assistance for flood victims that are not currently registered in NADRA.
In addition, he urged the Ministry of Climate Change to begin immediate preparations for the Monzón 2026 season and ordered him to present a comprehensive plan for the action of climate resilience in two weeks. The plan, he said, must address Pakistan’s growing vulnerability to climate change, including increasingly intense rains and floods.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister praised the efforts of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Provincial Disaster Management authorities (PDMA), the Pakistan Army and federal and provincial rescue and relief agencies for their coordinated operations in the affected areas.
The authorities informed the Prime Minister about the scope of the damage and the current state of the operations. According to the latest updates, the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers have reached parts of the center and south of Punjab and are expected to go through Panjnad.
The authorities have made preparations to handle a possible water flow from 1 to 1.2 million CUSECs; However, the real flow is expected to be around 600,000 Cusecs, significantly lower than initially projected.
In fine, district administration teams, military units and rescue workers are completely mobilized and work to safely manage the passage of flood waters without damaging embankments. Restoration efforts in the electricity sector have also shown progress, with 80 percent of the affected electricity infrastructure in the north and center of Pakistan already restored. Damaged roads and bridges have been repaired and reopened to traffic, facilitating the supply of relief and mobility.
It was reported that more than two million people have been evacuated from flood -prone areas throughout the country, while more than 4,100 people stranded in isolated areas have been rescued.
The federal government has sent more than 6,300 tons of help assets to the affected communities. To provide immediate health support, more than 2,400 medical camps have been established in the regions affected by floods.
The meeting was also reported that compensation for deceased people, injured and property damage is being processed through Nadra, with priority granted to the most affected.
