The Department of Meteorology of Pakistan has issued a drought alert due to a rain significantly below the average throughout the country, warning that the conditions could worsen in the southern and east regions.

Between September 1, 2024 and March 21, 2025, rain was 40% below normal throughout the country. Sindh recorded a 62%deficit, while Baluchistan experienced a 52%drop, according to official data.

Other regions also faced notable deficits: Punjab saw 38% less rain, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 35% and quass 29% dust compared to historical averages.

The weather office said that recent rains improved conditions in the central and upper regions, but southern Sindh, Baluchistan parts and Eastern Punjab plains continue to face dry conditions.

“There is severe water shortage in Tarbela and Mangla dams,” said the department, adding that the average temperatures in the areas of the south of March are 2–3 ° C above normal.

He also pointed out that in some southern regions, the number of consecutive dry days has exceeded 200, and warned that the situation can deteriorate even more if the rain does not improve.
