KARACHI:
To strengthen earthquake monitoring in the northern belt of the country, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed a new broadband seismic observatory in the Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, to improve real-time detection and detailed analysis of low-intensity tremors.
The new facility has been created to improve monitoring of seismic activity in the Hunza region and allow authorities to detect minor earthquakes as they occur.
Earlier, three seismological stations at Gilgit, Skardu and Chilas were operational. However, coverage in northern areas remained limited, requiring further expansion to ensure more complete monitoring.
According to the PMD, seismic monitoring in the region was further strengthened following recent reports of explosion-like sounds and mild tremors in Chapursan Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan.
