- Poland’s National Nuclear Research Center reports that a cyber attack was thwarted
- The MARIA reactor and systems remained safe and fully operational
- Authorities investigating; Early signs point to Iran, although false flag possible
Someone tried to infiltrate Poland’s National Center for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), the organization reported late last week.
In a brief announcement posted on its website, the research institution said it recently thwarted an attempted attack on its IT infrastructure and that its systems were not compromised.
“All security systems worked in accordance with procedures, the attempt was blocked and the actions taken allowed the immediate protection of the infrastructure and maintaining the continuity of the Institute’s work,” the statement reads. “No production, operational or research processes were interrupted, and the MARIA reactor is operating safely and without interruptions, at full power,” said Professor Jakub Kupecki, director of the NCBJ.

The Iranians are blamed
The organization did not discuss the nature of the attack, so we do not know whether the criminals attempted to exploit a software vulnerability or engineered an employee to reveal their login credentials. For all we know, this could have been a simple phishing email with a malware attachment.
It was probably more serious than that, since the institution decided to report the incident to the relevant authorities and have its defenders on high alert.
“The National Nuclear Research Center remains fully prepared to respond to any attempt to violate the digital security and critical infrastructure of the State,” the automatically translated notice reads.
While defenses are up, politicians point fingers at Iran.
“The first identifications of the entry vectors, that is, those places from where (the center) was attacked, are related to Iran,” Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski told private broadcaster TVN24+, PakGazette reports. “When there is finalinformation and the services review it, we will verify it, but there are many indications that it took place on the territory of Iran.”
However, beepcomputer He also highlighted that this could have been a false flag attack.
