Police ask for subsidies amid rise in terrorism

PESHAWAR:

As terrorism resurges in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial police has asked the government for a special allowance for its personnel, with the proposal estimated to cost around Rs 4.2 billion a month.

The province recorded a total of 1,588 terrorism-related cases in 14 districts in 2025.

The Central Police Office (CPO) sent a summary to KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, stating that the provincial government prioritized improving the capacity and welfare of the police in view of terrorism and security challenges.

“Through the government’s concentrated efforts and effective administrative measures, not only has the law and order situation improved, but the overall public image of the government has also been strengthened,” the summary reads.

He further noted that police personnel were receiving special financial incentives, including a terrorism allowance, in view of the serious risks, operational responsibilities and constant exposure to threats they routinely face.

The summary said these measures were aimed at boosting morale within the force and helping officers carry out their responsibilities with greater confidence.

He added that the KP police remained persistently engaged in confronting terrorists and insurgents, often putting their lives at risk due to their frontline responsibilities.

“The KP Police have made countless sacrifices, including the loss of precious lives and serious injuries,” the summary reads.

The document maintained that the duty of police officers in KP remained extremely risky and exposed them to threats of bombings, targeted attacks and other violent activities carried out by extremist elements.

He stated that the provincial police were carrying out their duties without any additional financial incentive, despite the difficult security environment and the operational nature of their assignments, in view of the continued high-risk duties performed by all cadres of the force.

He requested that a special allowance, equivalent to a basic salary, be granted to all ranks of the provincial force.

“The provision of this grant will not only recognize the extraordinary services and sacrifices of the KP Police, but will significantly improve their morale, efficiency and motivation in conducting critical security operations across the province,” the summary states.
