Power consumers face increase of Rs 1.6 per unit

ISLAMABAD:

Electricity prices have increased by Rs 1.63 per unit across the country, including Karachi, which is served by K-Electric, a private power company.

According to a notification issued this Wednesday by the National Electric Energy Regulatory Authority (Nepra), the increase was approved due to the monthly fuel adjustment corresponding to January.

Energy consumers will be charged the additional amount on their March electricity bills. The increase will also apply to K-Electric consumers. However, lifeline consumers and electric vehicle charging stations are exempt from the increase.

Nepra had earlier reserved its decision after holding a hearing on fuel price adjustment in January and issued the notification on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the regulator also approved a separate increase of 35 paise per unit under the quarterly adjustment mechanism. As a result of both adjustments, electric rates for consumers will increase even further in the next billing cycle.
