PPL attacks important oil, gas reserves in atock

Karachi:

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has reported a meaning discovery of oil and gas in its Dhok Sultan-03 well in District Attocck, Punjab. This marks the second finding of hydrocarbons in the Dhok Sultan block and is among the deepest oil discoveries in fractured carbonate formations naturally in the Potwar region.

According to PPL, the well was drilled after extensive geological, geophysical and field engineering studies. The company said that the optimization of the well design helped overcome the drilling challenges, saving time and cost.

PPL, Dhok Sultan Block operator with a work interest of 75 percent, was associated with Private Limited Holdings Government (GHPL), which has the remaining 25 percent. The drilling began on January 18, 2025 and reached a depth of 5,815 meters.

Directed hydrocarbon potential test of the Patala and Lockhart formations. The results showed 1,469 barrels per day (BPD) oil flows (BPD) and 2.56 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas at a pit head flow (WHFP) of 1,147 psig in a strangulation of 32/64 “to a rimgel of 48/64”, the production reached 2,113 bpd of oil and 4.13 MMSCFD of 8 PSFP.

The discovery underlines the potential of unbelievable hydrocarbons of the mature sub-basin of Potwar-Kohat, considered a challenging exploration zone for a long time. PPL said that advanced technologies, detailed geophysical analysis and internal technical capabilities allowed progress.

Company officials said that new reserves could contribute significantly to the combination of national energy and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
