- Sony is sharing more details about its NFL coaching headphones
- The Sony NFL coach’s headphones will make their debut for the 2025 NFL season
- Consumers will not be acquireable, but promises the best ANC in class such as WH-1000xm6
Sony is the official NFL technology partner, the National Football League, and we know that the technological giant has been working on a headset for coaches and other officials. We even take a first glance in January on the Consumer Electronics show.
Now, however, Sony NFL coach’s headphones are official, it comes in three styles and will make its debut before the 2025 season. And when the season begins at the end of this year, you can expect 32 teams to use the headphones.
Unlike the last Sony Wh-1000xm6 for Sony, the NFL coach’s headphones are made, well, which describes the name. It is designed from scratch to work for coaches in a game environment, and that begins with connectivity. It does not have bluetooth on board, but connects to a special connectivity box that takes advantage of the private network, fed by Verizon, for the NFL and the equipment.
There are also physical buttons or capacitive tactile controls in the NFL coach’s headphones. Nor does it have a rechargeable battery; On the contrary, Sony goes to the old school, possibly a faster route than requiring a recharge when you turn on this headset with two AAA batteries. Nor does it carry a specific IPX rating, but Sony tested the extreme heat and extreme heat unit in the NFL games.
This was done in environments where these climatic conditions are recreated, as well as through live tests during the NFL games last season, including a frigid and snowy game at the Highmark stadium in the Buffalo Bills.
Sony’s past experience with several consumption headphones, including the WH-1000 series, will report the design and other aspects, but will probably focus on the cancellation and noise collection. Nor is it as simple as multiple design options for this headset, depending on the equipment and even individual preference.
Yes, it comes in a model with left and right headphones, but there are also two other options: only a left headset and only a right headset. The three, however, come with a microphone in an boom. Sony, however, offers active noise cancellation on the three models.
Sony put this to the test in stadium environments where the noise of the environmental crowd was measured to 100 decibels.
The resulting noise cancellation does, says Sony, works effectively and has been specifically tuned for this case of use, here that means being able to listen to communication while on the sidelines, but also for the microphone on board using signal voice processing to collect only the person who speaks, and not the background talk or the sound even of the stadium.
Taking into account that there are no buttons on the headphones, the microphone will automatically silence when the pen rises. However, the belt pack, to which the headphones will be plugged in, will also have some manual controls.
Much of the approach here clearly was destined to make a durable headset that could resist the game after the use of the game, although Sony confirmed with us that each team would have backups and that the general characteristic set was designed for each coaching staff.
Sony NFL coach’s headphones will be used during the 2025 season, which begins in early September, but will make an early debut during the fame hall game at the end of July. Of course, it has a Sony brand in front and the center, after all, it will be shown on television. I am curious to know if this makes it a simultaneous transmission beyond sports: Homer Rocking One could be fine.
As you can suspect with such a specially designed product, there are no plans for consumer release for the NFL coach’s headphones. Those after a Sony headset should consider the Sony Wh-000xm6, and can read our complete review here.
