  • The movement objectives for cohesion in the country characterized by immigration.
  • Agencies have flexibility to offer help in other languages.
  • Almost 68 million people speak a language that is not English.

Washington: President Donald Trump has appointed English as the official language of the United States, saying that he would bring cohesion to a country characterized by immigration around the world.

The White House published a Trump executive order that says it is “past tense” that English declares the official language of the nation.

“A designated language at the national level is the center of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenship that can exchange ideas freely in a shared language,” says the document.

The order revokes a presidential mandate of the 1990s under the then president Bill Clinton, which requires that federal agencies and federal funds provide assistance to those who do not speak English.

According to the new document, the agencies will still have the flexibility of deciding how much help offer in languages in addition to English.

“Nothing in this order […] It requires or directs any change in the services provided by any agency, “says the Executive Order.

He adds that agency bosses are empowered to determine what is necessary “to comply with the mission of their respective agencies and efficiently provide government services to the US people.”

Trump has issued a storm of executive orders in his first weeks in office, seeking to put his right -wing in the country.

However, many of their orders are being challenged in court, particularly when they seek to cancel federal financing approved by Congress.

Although the White House recognizes that more than 350 languages are spoken in the United States, the order says that English has been the language of the nation “from the foundation of our Republic” and “the historical government documents of our nation, including the declaration of independence and the Constitution, have been written in English.”

Almost 68 million people speak a language that is not English at home, according to figures from the 2019 United States government.

While English is, with much, the majority language in the country, it is estimated that more than 40 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home.

In addition to other groups of immigrants, including Chinese and Vietnamese, the United States linguistic landscape complex includes dozens of American native languages.
