In his message on parliamentarism day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the Nation to strengthen parliamentary institutions, defend democratic values and ensure that citizens’ voices are reflected in the legislation.
“The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed every year on June 30, reaffirms our global commitment to strengthen democratic institutions,” said the prime minister in his message.
“The day also celebrates the vital role of parliaments in the promotion of inclusive governance, guaranteeing a significant representation of women and young people, and adopting technological innovation in legislative practices.
“Our Parliament occupies a central place in our democratic framework. Through its legislative authority and the vigilant work of its permanent committees, Parliament guarantees responsibility, transparency and supervision of the Executive.
“The Constitution of Pakistan enshrines the representation of women through seats reserved under articles 51 and 59. Our parliamentary women have also increased to leadership positions: currently, eight senators of women and four women members of the National Assembly serve as presidents of parliamentary committees, destroying glass roofs and establishing an example of inclusive and empowered leadership,” he resorted.
The prime minister said: “Parliament has also remained proactive by promulgating progressive legislation, particularly to advance gender equality and social protection.”
“Inclusion has also guided our governance approach. While preparing the federal budget for fiscal year 2025–26, the Government actively consulted the partners of the coalition and welcomed the contributions of the entire political spectrum. This inclusive spirit is the basis of a healthy democracy,” he continued.
“Our parliamentarians continue to play a dynamic role in global parliamentary diplomacy. Through the sustained commitment to platforms such as the Interparliamentary Union (IPU), our representatives have advocated for peace, development and international cooperation.”
“After recent tensions in southern Asia, the Pakistan multiparty parliamentary delegation effectively projected our perspective in global forums through diplomatic dissemination.
“Recognizing the evolutionary needs of modern governance, we have also adopted technology to improve parliamentary transparency and accessibility.
“By marking this important day, we renew our resolution to strengthen parliamentary institutions, safeguard democratic values and ensure that the voices of citizenship are really reflected in the legislation process,” he concluded.
