Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a message on the occasion of the International Day to combat Islamophobia, remembering the world the serious challenges faced by Muslims due to the growing discrimination, hate and attacks on their sacred symbols and places of worship.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the importance of this day, which was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly three years ago, as a call to action against the increase in Islamophobia worldwide.
He said the day reflects the collective desire of the international community to address this issue through strong legislative and political actions.
Pakistan, who directed the UN in this important initiative, also welcomed the measures taken by the Member States to address discrimination against Muslims, including the declaration of desecration of the Koran as illegal.
The prime minister requested an urgent action to combat the dangerous wave of Islamophobia and address shameless violations of human rights and religious freedoms. He stressed that there is no justification to lack respect for religious symbols under the appearance of freedom of expression.
Sharif also emphasized that respect for all religions and their venerated personalities is essential for global peace and harmony.
He called international forums to recognize the deep damage caused by such actions and work collectively to avoid them.
On this day, Pakistan reaffirmed his demand for action against the incidents of Koran desecration, mosque attacks and other forms of religious intolerance addressed to Muslims.
The prime minister expressed anticipation for the appointment of a UN special envoy to address Islamophobia, as decided by the UN General Assembly.
