Prime Minister urges nationwide shift to electric vehicles to reduce fuel costs and protect economy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday underlined the need to introduce environment-friendly electric vehicles (EVs) across the country, citing the evolving regional situation and rising global oil prices as key concerns, and highlighting the importance of conserving foreign exchange reserves.

At a ceremony to mark the supply of eco-smart electric vehicles to the Traffic Police in the capital Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz said such energy-saving initiatives should be replicated by all police agencies and provinces.

He noted that the Ministry of Home Affairs had provided 15 electric vehicles, which run on batteries without using petrol or oil, adding that another batch would be added soon.

Prime Minister Shehbaz termed the initiative significant and said such measures would have a positive impact on the country’s foreign exchange reserves. On the occasion, he also congratulated Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his team for launching the initiative.

The prime minister said work on fuel economy and electric vehicle policy began before the current regional crisis, resulting in the procurement of these vehicles.

The ceremony was attended by federal ministers, senior officials of Islamabad Police and other relevant authorities.

The provision of eco-smart electric vehicles is part of the Prime Minister’s broader vision and the government’s energy saving policy.

Earlier, Islamabad Police Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi briefed the Prime Minister about the initiative. Each vehicle will be manned by a captain, a male lifeguard, a lifeguard and a driver, all wearing a special uniform.

The vehicles would be deployed on key avenues in the capital to ensure smooth traffic flow. Each vehicle, after a full charge, can travel a distance of 350 to 400 kilometers. Fast charging takes between 60 and 90 minutes, while normal charging requires between six and eight hours. Compared to gasoline vehicles, each electric vehicle is expected to save up to Rs 0.55 million per month.

The Prime Minister was further informed that the vehicles would recover their acquisition costs within 13 to 14 months. Under the federal government’s modern traffic management plan, another 15 vehicles will be added to the traffic police fleet.
