Prince Harry wasn’t allowed to be himself during a high-profile sporting event, a former employee recalls.
The Duke of Sussex, who attended the World Darts Championship in 2014, said
Barry Hearn says he is not allowed to identify with a normal man.
Speaking about his time at Alexandra Paalce, Hearn said: “I think he’d just got out of the army and he’s obviously on a bit of a bender. He brought three mates with him. They were a lot of fun.
“And at one point, the crowd started singing. The rules were pretty strict. They allowed us to put his face on the big screens only three times during the night, just for an instant.
He added: “So he was having a good night out with his mates, having a few pints, having a good time. And the crowd started singing: ‘Harry, Harry, say hello’. And he looked at me and I saw a bit of curiosity on his face, as if to say, ‘what do I do?’
“I looked at him and said, ‘If you stand up now and wave back to these people, your street cred is guaranteed for life because you’ve identified with the average guy, the people who make up the majority of this country.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think I’m allowed to do that.’… I thought that was pretty sad,” the expert noted.
