Punjab ends the new draft of the local government

LAHORE:

The Punjab government ended the draft of a new local government system, confirmed the sources of the party on Wednesday, and the Local Government Law 2025 is expected to be approved in the Provincial Assembly after the budget session.

According to party experts, the new system will eliminate direct elections for presidents and vice presidents of the Council of the Union. Instead, the elected councilors will select the main representatives.

In addition, the councilor’s election method at neighborhood level is also being reviewed. According to the new mechanism, the councilors will play elections throughout the Council of the Union instead of the individual neighborhoods.

The sources of the party also revealed that, unlike the previous model, the financial and administrative powers will now be transferred to Tehsil’s advice instead of the district councils.

As part of the next fiscal plan, the Punjab government has allocated RS5 billion specifically for the realization of local government elections. In the first phase, the Assembly will approve the budget, followed by the approval of the new Local Government Law 2025.

Meanwhile, speaking with journalists in Lahore, Punjab Minister, the local government, Zeeshan Rafique, said the legislative process on the new law was expected to be completed in July.
