Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given approval in the main one for an electric bus project throughout the province that will see 1,500 buses deployed in multiple cities.
The decision occurred during a high level meeting of the provincial transport department chaired by the principal minister.
In the first phase, 380 electric buses will be introduced in Lahore and Gujranwala. The acquisition process for these buses that begin immediately, with a deadline established for June has been ordered.
Additional cities such as Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan will be included in later stages of the project.
Maryam Nawaz also ordered the officials to present road plans for Faisalabad and Gujranwala, and demanded progress in the planning of the Yellow Line of Lahore in 15 days.
A new transport and control command center for LaHore has also been approved, together with the establishment of cargo stations for the electric fleet.
The prime minister emphasized that modern public transport is the right of all citizens, not only those of Lahore, expressing their desire for “world class bus systems in all the main cities of Punjab”.
