Islamabad:
A judicial magistrate sent on Thursday the students arrested from the Quaid-I-Azam University (Qau) to jail in a 14-day judicial prison in relation to a case recorded for their refusal to vacate the hostel rooms. The court also ordered that students were produced again on August 13.
The judicial magistrate registered Abbas presided over the hearing, where the police presented the students detained. The student’s legal team opposed pretrial detention and sought the students’ discharge.
The lawyer Riasat Ali Azad argued that 29 students were in police custody and that the charges were largely faithful, not to mention weapons in the FIR, which referred mainly to sloganering. “This case does not justify a return; guarantees a download,” he said. Gujar questioned the management of the University issue: “Even tenants are notices before eviction. These are students who could be future lawyers, judges and politicians.”
Defensor lawyers criticized the investigation, not pointing out evidence of outbursts or injuries and accusations of the authorities of the hard hand, including preventing lawyers from being with students. The lawyer Imaan Mazari alleged police misconduct, claiming that the agents tried to run over a vehicle and did not show due respect to the court.
However, the university lawyer, Raja Zahoorul Hassan, argued that the detainees were not genuine students but strangers involved in illegal activities. During their arguments, the students sang “shame, shame”, which caused the disgust of the court.
The Prosecutor’s Office requested a physical return of 10 days, but the court sent all students detained to judicial custody, ordering their production again on August 13.
Outside the courtroom, tensions intensified when some lawyers allegedly surrounded and tried to assault the university lawyer, their son and the security in charge, Colonel (retd) Nadeem.
