Rafael Devers had a glove on Tuesday when he debuted in the first base during the second game of the San Francisco giants of a series of three games with the Braves of Atlanta.
Playing defense was largely a surprise, considering that Devers insisted on his desire to exclusively handle the designated batter tasks when he was with his previous team, Boston’s red socks. But, Devers’s comments after the game were perhaps even more surprising.

Devers said that he really prefers to play defense to collect exclusively a bat during MLB games.
“It keeps me active. It keeps my head out of thinking about the next day,” Devers said according to San Francisco Chronicle. “I prefer to be in the field than in the cage hitting all the time and think about the next turn to bat.”

Rafael Devers had a tense spring training. During the exhibition period, the manager of the Red Sox Alex Cora and Devers seemed to disagree on whether it would spend time in the baseball diamond that covers the third base.
Shortly before the opening day, Cora confirmed that Devers would handle the designated batter tasks of the full -time team. However, when Boston’s main main base, Triston Casas, suffered a serious injury, caused another proposal of the brass of the red socks.

The former Red Sox pitcher and the current baseball officer of the franchise, Craig Breslow, raised the idea that Devers covered the first base in the future, the New York Post reported in May. However, the three-time MLB closed the idea.

During his public refutation of the possible position change, Devers cited the previous instructions of the red socks related to him using his glove.
“I know that I am a ball player, but at the same time, they can’t wait for each position to play,” said Devers through a translator, Boston Globe reported in May. “In spring training, they talked to me and basically they told me to keep my glove, that I was not going to play in any other position other than DH.”
Devers had two base successes during his first base debut with San Francisco. The giants finally held a 9-0 victory over the Braves on Tuesday. The giants also won Wednesday’s game against Atlanta to win the three -game series.
