- A Redditor Bought a 32GB Corsair RAM Kit for $300
- In the end they sent them 10 of those kits.
- That’s a total of 320GB of RAM, or $3,000 of memory (actually more at current pricing)
Lately we are seeing a clear increase in scams around RAM sales (now that DDR5 is so expensive, it is inevitable), but here is something that worked the other way around, and this time very much in favor of the buyer.
As posted on Reddit, someone ordered a Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM kit with a capacity of 32GB and paid $300 for the privilege.
However, what they received was a box of 10 of these 32GB kits, which of course is worth $3,000, based on the price apparently paid anyway, which seems cheap. (If we look at Newegg in the US right now, for example, the cheapest Corsair Vengeance DDR5 kits I can see are around $400, so this RAM stack actually sells for well over three thousand dollars on paper.)
Of course, we must be careful whether it is a genuine story or one made up to attract attention. Obviously there’s no real evidence, although the photo of the stack of RAM kits in the box looks pretty genuine, but that’s all we can really go on here.
So arm yourself with plenty of seasoning, but while this type of error is certainly very rare, it can happen, although it is not usually on this scale.
Analysis: problems with the warehouse?
Assuming this is a genuine story of an error in fulfilling an order, how could such an error occur? There has clearly been a bug in the inventory system somewhere, and as the other Redditors discussing the incident conclude, it’s likely a bug at the warehouse where a staff member scanned the box of 10 kits as a single item, and no one further up the chain thought to double-check this.
Whatever the case, the reality for most of us is that buying RAM is now a miserable affair, especially DDR5, and you are much more likely to come across a scam than any kind of mistake like this.
That said, these things happen, and there is another user on the Reddit thread who claims that a friend received five RAM kits when he ordered one and contacted Amazon to tell them about the error. Apparently: “Amazon customer service basically told him to keep them because it was his mistake. He offered to return 4 and they just told him it didn’t matter.”
As for what the Redditor who was sent these 10 kits is going to do, he says: “I’m selling it to the community below the new inflated MSRP.”
As another Redditor put it, “My friend is here Robin Hoodmaxxing,” and that’s an understandable sentiment given how painful the price of RAM has become, but of course there could be other potential ramifications (no pun intended) with this approach to seller error.
