- Ransomware attacks increased four times in 2024, Barracuda’s report states
- The increase was possible thanks to the increase in RAAS suppliers
- The attacks have also become faster, says the report
Ransomware attacks increased four times in the period of one year, probably driven by the increase in ransomware offers such as Service (RAAS), has affirmed new research.
A new in -depth analysis published by cybersecurity researchers of the XDR manager of Barracuda analyzed 11 billion registered IT events to identify potential risks. In fact, one million were malicious, and of them: 16,812 were confirmed attacks that required immediate defensive actions.
Although most of the types of attack (ddos, malware, phishing, etc.) were largely stable compared to previous years, and extended relatively uniform for months, ransomware stands out. According to the findings, the number of these attacks increased four times for 2024. Although they cannot be absolutely safe, researchers believe that the increase is driven by the prevalence of ransomware offers as a service.
Accelerating
“Developers behind RAAS platforms often have the time, resources and skills to invest a lot in advanced and evasive tools and templates,” he said in the report. “The RAAS operating model also extends the group of attackers that display ransomware, which takes it within the reach of any person willing to lease and take advantage of the kits.”
Another remarkable finding is that cyber attacks are becoming faster. Barracuda researchers said that advances in security tools and strategies allow security professionals to detect attacks more easily and eliminate them from the fastest network. In response, the attackers accelerated their attacks, increasing the risks as well.
All this means that it has never been so important for organizations to implement effective and comprehensive security, concludes Barracuda.
That includes multifactor solid authentication, different access controls and a “solid approach” for patches management and data protection. To complete everything, companies must regularly train their employees with cybersecurity awareness.
“The attackers will explode each security gap they find to promote their attacks,” concludes Barracuda. Companies must respond with an “integral XDR solution” that integrates network security, end point, server, cloud and email.
