Islamabad:

The renowned mountaineer Murad Sadpa, known for his feats of mountain climbing and rescue missions of great altitude, posthumously received the Sitara-E-Imtiaz in recognition of his services.

The prestigious award was received by his widow during the investiture ceremony held in Aiwan-E-Sadr. Last year, Sadpara tragically lost his life while Broad Peak descended, a giant mountain of 8,047 meters (26,400 feet) in the Karakoram mountain range. He was beaten by a rock that fell on his way through the mountain, suffering fatal injuries. He had begun the climb next to a Portuguese climber, but his rise was interrupted when his partner fell ill in the middle of the hard climatic conditions. Although it was sent to a rescue team, it died before the aid could reach it.

Sadpara’s legacy is marked by his extraordinary courage. A few weeks before his death, he played a vital role in the recovery of Muhammad Hassan Shigri’s body of an altitude of 8,200 m in K2, an innovative mission recognized as the first of its kind in the second highest peak in the world. The previous year, he participated in another historical recovery, demolishing the remains of an Afghan climber of camp 3 in K2.

His unwavering courage and dedication earned him the admiration of the global mountaineering community. A special thanks extended to all mountaineers, the FCNA and the Gilgit-Baltistan administration for their support during the awards ceremony. The recognition also extended to the patron of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Major General Irfan Arshad, for his continuous assistance to Sadpara’s family during his difficult time after his death.
