- Renault UK suffers cyber attack exposing customer data; Passwords and bank details were not affected
- Victims include buyers and competition participants; Renault urges precaution with urgent or suspicious communications
- Attack follows similar infractions in Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo, linked to known threat actors groups
Renault has become the last great car manufacturer to suffer a cyber attack and data violation.
The United Kingdom’s arm of the French car manufacturer has issued a warning to its clients, noting that confidential personal data may have been stolen, and urging customers to attend unplayed incoming communications, especially those who claim to come from Renault, as well as those who carry a unhealthy urgency dose.
We do not know who the threat actors are, or if it was a ransomware attack, as was the case of Jaguar Land Rover. We know that criminals stole people’s full names, postal addresses, birth dates, genres, telephone numbers and vehicle identification numbers. In some cases, vehicle registration details can also be accessed. Passwords and bank data remained safe, said.
Unknown identity
“We are in the process of contacting all affected customers, advising them on cyber attack and reminding them of being cautious of any unre requested request for personal information,” said a Renault spokesman.
“We want to apologize to all affected customers. The privacy of the data is of the utmost importance for us and we deeply regret that this has happened.”
The automobile manufacturer did not indicate how many customers have been affected, but emphasized that, in addition to real buyers, people who entered the personal skills or data shared in other manners are also at risk.
Recently there have been a series of cyber attacks against car manufacturers. Jaguar Land Rover suffered a highly disruptive attack that forced the company to close multiple facilities for months, to deal with the consequences.
Volvo, on the other hand, lost staff data after a supply chain attack against one of its IT suppliers.
JLR was supposedly beaten by dispersed lapsus $ hunters, while Volvo’s attack was courtesy of Datacarry.
