- Riot Games is expected to lay off 80 staff members 2XKO equipment
- Despite the success of the launch, the game apparently underperformed by Riot’s standards.
- Version 1.0 of the game has only been available for a few weeks
2XKO Developer Riot Games is set to lay off a significant portion of the team that worked on the free-to-play tag team fighting game.
In an update posted to the official Riot Games website, executive producer Tom Cannon detailed the motivation behind the decision.
“After much discussion and reflection, we are reducing the size of the 2XKO team,” he wrote.
“I want you to know that the decision was not made lightly. As we expanded from PC to console, we saw consistent trends in how players interacted with 2XKO. “The game has resonated with a passionate core audience, but overall momentum has not reached the level needed to support a team of this size over the long term.”
According to Kotaku, 80 employees are expected to face layoffs, which is about half of the total. 2XKO development team. This despite a relatively successful console launch. The game finally arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S in January, after a long early access period on PC.
During the launch period of your console, 2XKO became one of the most downloaded free titles of the month, surpassing similar free competitors such as Marvel Rivals and High guard.
Cannon rightly acknowledged that this news “will raise questions and concerns.” He promised that updates will continue to be shared and that 2XKO You will continue to receive content.

Look
In short, it doesn’t look good. 2XKO It has already had its fair share of controversies of various sizes. From its long development period to its release with a pitifully small roster of 11 characters (for a 2v2 fighting game, no less), this latest news hasn’t exactly inspired confidence in the player base.
“I can’t wait 2XKO I will never be in another fighting game tournament again after this year,” one user posted on Bluesky.
“I thought I was pretty cynical about Riot and 2XKObut it turns out I wasn’t cynical enough,” wrote another.
The layoffs have been understandably devastating for some. “Ten years later 2XKO12 at Riot and they fired me with 30 minutes notice hahaha. It will take some time,” wrote a Bluesky user who apparently worked on the project.
What makes this even more embarrassing is that 2XKO has been, to a large extent, positively received by its players. Of course, there are the usual complaints about free-to-play games regarding microtransactions and the business model in general, but the core game appears to be fun and engaging.
I could be flippant and say 2XKO developers were punished for not joining immediately League of Legends either Team fighting tactics numbers, but maybe there’s some truth to that.
