- Swegta’s Bully The online mod was closed and all source code was removed from the internet.
- The creator did not give any reason, but it is suspected that Rockstar sent a cease and desist to shut down the project.
- A developer on the project said, “I know this wasn’t something we wanted.”
The creator of Bully Online mod has announced that the project has been permanently closed, a month after launch.
The viral mod was released in December and turned Rockstar Games’ 2006 game into a multiplayer experience; However, the project has been completely removed from the Internet, including the source code.
“The Bully Online project is closing. Thank you all for playing,” project leader ‘Swegta’ announced in an update on their official website (via GamesRadar).
Insider Gaming was able to find screenshots of Discord messages from Swegta, which offered more information.
“The Bully Online project will be shut down forever, which unfortunately means that all of the following will happen within 24 hours: our official Bully Online server (at swegta.com) will be shut down, script development for Bully Online will stop, the source code will be removed from swegta.com, all of our web pages that reference it will be removed, launcher downloads will be deleted, and all Bully Online account data will be permanently deleted,” one message reads.
The team member also said Swegta will make a video with more details about the closure, writing, “We know this wasn’t something we wanted.”
Before the mod was released, Swegta said there were no concerns that Rockstar would order the mod’s removal as it required a legal copy of the game to work, “does not compete with any Rockstar Games/Take-Two properties” and “only modifies the game executable and loads content we created.”
Swegta or his team didn’t offer a reason as to why the mod was shut down, but this situation seems like Rockstar likely sent a cease and desist to the creator, something the company has been known to do in the past.
Speaking of mods, Rockstar has launched Cfx Marketplace, a website dedicated to buying and selling GTA Online and Red Dead Online mods.
