- Roku Voice can answer questions about movies, shows and actors
- Better discovery tools, including Live TV Zone search and, coming soon, Live TV Channel Guide.
- Bluetooth Headset Mode Will Be Implemented Globally on Streaming Stick/Stick Plus
Roku has announced a number of updates to its smart TV platform coming in the coming months, including an AI update that sounds very similar to Google TV’s Gemini feature.
Roku Voice is getting a big update, and in addition to the usual command-based navigation, you’ll be able to ask questions like “what kind of fish is Nemo?” or “how scary it is” the glow?” and get spoken responses.
Roku Voice will also be able to analyze follow-up questions and offer quick start options for shows and movies in its catalog when appropriate and relevant.
Roku Fall Update: What else is new?
Roku has also improved its discovery features. Preview plays get a new Ways to Watch button, allowing you to see which channels or apps can stream the show and jump directly from the preview to the show or movie.
The search function is also increasingly useful. It has already been added to the What to Watch section and Roku will be rolling it out to more parts of the platform. Live TV Zone is the next destination to get the search tool, and will later be implemented in the Live TV Channel Guide.
When you browse, your Roku TV or streaming device will show you where you can stream each title by highlighting up to two streaming apps based on your active subscriptions.
Another welcome feature is Bluetooth headset mode, which is rolling out to more devices. It will come to both the Roku Streaming Stick and the Roku Streaming Stick Plus.
Roku’s Mobile App Is Getting Multiple Most Wanted Updates
In addition to the improvements above, Roku is also rolling out new live scores and reminders for Roku Sports. The former will display live results on in-game tiles, allowing you to keep an eye on multiple events at once. Plus, there’s a spoiler-free setup if you plan on watching events to catch up. And Reminders will send you a mobile notification when it’s time to tune into a game.
Roku will also be rolling out improvements to its mobile app, starting in the coming weeks, including some of the most sought-after features like closed captioning, Find My Remote, sleep timers, and quick access shortcuts. There’s a new Rate button that lets you mark shows and movies as “liked,” “disliked,” and/or “watched,” mirroring the TV app, and your reviews will sync across all your devices. The For You page will also have a new navigation bar that organizes everything into sensible categories, like TV shows, movies, and sports.
Software updates will begin rolling out to Roku devices and mobile app stores in the coming weeks.
