Karachi:
The Pakistan General Auditor has revealed losses of more than RS22 billion in the engineering operations of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), according to the audit report for 2024–25.
The report set two main cases of financial loss. In one case, losses greater than RS14 billion were incurred due to land airplanes, including six Boeing 777 owned by PIA and two ATR-72 aircraft taken in lease.
The auditors pointed out that the losses arose from the fault until the fulfillment of the maintenance deadlines and the delays in the elimination of defective motors. The Boeing plane remained punished for variable periods between March 11, 2020 and March 1, 2021.

The audit paragraph highlighted an additional loss of RS6 billion caused by another 25 permanently founded aircraft engines. The losses occurred because the engines were not reused or eliminated in time.
The report also revealed that around RS3 billion had been paid to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in relation to these grounded airplanes, while incurred in financial damages separately in parking charges.
These problems have persisted since the special audit of PIA that covers 2008-2017.
The sources said that although a meeting of the Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) was scheduled in January 2025 to review the matter, it was never convened.
