- MSI has listed an RTX 5080 24 GB model on its website
- It is not the first time that MSI hints a bigger card
- Some claim that it is a mistake, others a sign of things to come
MSI has mocked an RTX 5080 model with 24 GB GDDR7 VRM (top of the 16 GB standard) of the 80 classes card on its website.
Dressed by Tweaktown, a compatibility list of the Wi-Fi motherboard X870 Wi-Fi of MSI.
Before the release date of RTX 5080 on January 30, 2025, we previously covered rumors that an RTX 5080 24 GB version could be “incoming” because Samsung’s GDDR7 memory modules are sent in 2GB (with 3GB configurations on the way). This is part of the reason why RTX 5090 presents 32GB GDDR7 (above the GDDR6X of 24 GB of RTX 4090).
This source also indicates a previous occasion when MSI showed an Vanguard RTX 5080 variant with 24 GB GDDR7 in a promotional video, with the supposed memory group seen in the packaging. However, it has been calm (outside rumors and speculation since then) until now.
This may be an error by MSI, but also shows that the 80 classes card could present the double of available VRM. Interestingly, the list does not have the standard version of 16 GB in the specifications sheet, so the company could have listed an amount of the position score based on the information prior to the launch instead of the retail figures.
That said, it is not the first time that we have seen different capabilities of the graphics cards of the memory pool, as with the original launch window for the then canceled RTX 4080 12GB (which later became the RTX 4070 TI). Similarly, RTX 4060 TI exists in 8 GB and 16 GB configurations, demonstrating that two versions of the same GPU can succeed in the market without confusing consumers.
A sign of things to come for the 80 classes card?
Whether the RTX 5080 24 GB list is a genuine error or not, the possibility of having two options in the market is just something good for people, since it will have the option of two different GPUs, with a possible latest “future resistant” model for the 4K game as launches require more vram than we usually see.
Some players have expressed their disappointment in which RTX 5080 has the same memory group as RTX 4080 (despite the GDDR7 jump of GDDR6X and the differences in the bandwidth seen). This was seen with the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 TI, both with the same respective memory groups of 12 GB and 16 GB as their previous generation counterparts.
After many months of speculation around an updated version of RTX 5080 24 GB, we can see it to the surface, or it could continue to be little more than a possibility, hinting towards the next generation. If it is released, it could be the half step between him and the RTX 5090, which makes sense given the difference of $ 1,000 in MSRP between the two; If we had to speculate on the potential price, the $ 1,200 (which coincide with the original RTX 4080) seems very likely.
