Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry Hail Amazon for a new thrust towards cinemas

Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry and other Hollywood stars lit the charm in Las Vegas on Wednesday to display Amazon.com (AMZN.O), opens a new expanded tab in the film business.

Gosling appeared in the annual Cinemacon Convention of Theater Owners after a trailer debut for its next science fiction epic Hail Mary project, Based on a popular novel by Andy Weir.

In the film, Gosling portrays a teacher turned into an astronaut who embarks on a long -lasting mission to save the planet and meets an alien named Rocky.

“That is why we are going to the cinema,” Gosling said.

“I not only say that because I am in that, but also because I am a producer in the movie,” he said to laughter. “And it is also true.”

Hail Mary project It will be launched next March when Amazon takes the rhythm of films releases.

The online retailer, which also operates the Prime video transmission service, has launched a handful of films in theaters every year during the last decade. The company now promises to increase that to at least 15 per year by 2027. It has already scheduled 14 releases by 2026.

Amazon bought the MGM Studio and its vast films library in 2022. Wednesday’s presentation was Amazon’s first in Cinemacon.

“We are committed to doing this in the long term,” said Mike Hopkins, chief of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “When Amazon commits something, we tend to make it big.”

The theater owners welcomed Amazon to their annual meeting, hoping that the company will fill a vacuum to the left when Walt Disney (dis.n) opens a new tab subsumed the Fox Movie Studio in 2019. Cabbing returns in the United States and Canada remain below pre-pondemic levels.

During the launch of Amazon, Chris Pratt joked with the audience of a chair used as an accessory in the film MercyThe story of a murder suspect who tries to prove his innocence. Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri promoted “after hunting”, a thriller about a scandal on a university campus. Hemsworth and Halle Berry made fun of their robbery movie Crime 101.

Affleck took the stage to promote Accountant 2, Gavin O’Connor’s correction director, when he said that the original film made his debut nine years ago.

“Eight years, five months, two weeks, five days and 10 hours have passed,” said Affleck, reflecting the precision of his character.

O’Connor praised Amazon for his commitment to send films first to theaters instead of directly to the transmission.

“Streamers are now the guardians,” O’Connor said in an interview with Reuters. “If you are not putting movies in cinemas, these things can disappear, it is not a joke.”

“They have to keep the flame,” he added.

Amazon recently took creative control of the James Bond franchise. The company did not provide any clue on who will choose to play the famous British spy.

“We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character while bringing a new new and exciting chapter to the public around the world,” said Courtnay Valenti, head of Amazon MGM film.
