The legend of the member of the Hall of Fame and the Chicago puppies, Ryne Sandberg, died after a long battle against cancer, MLB announced Monday night.
Sandberg was 65 years old.
“We are deeply sad for the death of the member of the Hall of Fame Ryne Sandberg,” MLB wrote in a statement on social networks.

“The beloved second base of the puppies was a consistency model of five tools in the 1980s and early 90s, making 10 consecutive teams of All-Star and winning 9 consecutive prizes of gold gloves.”
“With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has died today,” the puppies wrote in a statement about X with an image of “Ryno.”

Sandberg was appointed MVP of the League during the 1984 season, where he had a war of 8.5 League leaders, while led the road in races (114) and triple (19). Reduced .314/.367/.520 that year with 36 doubles, 19 home runs and 84 races promoted in 156 games.
MLB’s tribute to Sandberg included his performance on June 23, 1984, which was called “The Sandberg Game” forever.

“On June 23, 1984, a National Television Court saw Sandberg hit a couple of homers who tied in the ninth and tenth entries of the cardinals and the future member of the Hall of Fame Bruce Sutter. Part of a magical postseason career of the puppies, the game is remembered forever in Chicago as” Sandberg’s game. “
Sandberg debuted with the Philadelphia Philis, the team that recruited him in the twentieth round of the 1978 amateur draft out of North Central High School in Spokane, Washington, in 1981 (while he quickly moved to the puppies the following season, Sandberg returned to handle the philis by parts of three seasons.
But Sandberg’s legacy in the diamond entered the northern side of the Ventosa city, where he hit .285/.344/.452 with 282 homers and 2,151 blows for 15 seasons with the puppies. In addition to his star defense, Sandberg won seven Silver Slugger awards and won a home run.

“On June 23, 2024, the 340th anniversary of their iconic moment, the puppies presented a Sandberg statue on the outskirts of Wrigley Field,” the MLB statement continued.
Sandberg was included in the National Baseball Hall in 2005.
