SA vs PAK 2024/25, South Africa vs Pakistan, 2nd Test, Day 1, Cape Town Match Report, Jan 3-7, 2025

Shake South Africa chose to bat vs Pakistan

Temba Bavuma won a second consecutive toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan on a warm but slightly cloudy morning in Cape Town.

All eyes will be on the Newlands pitch after it received an unsatisfactory rating when last year’s Test ended in 107 overs as a result of extreme seam movement and variable bounce. The surface looks similar to the Newlands pitches (dappled green with less grass than SuperSport Park) and, despite last year, is usually good for hitting on the first two days.

South Africa announced their XI on the eve of the match and included three changes from the team that won at SuperSport Park. Fit-again Keshav Maharaj and Wiaan Mulder are back and 18-year-old left-arm spinner Kwena Maphaka will make his Test debut. He becomes the youngest player to test for South Africa.

There was no place for Corbin Bosch, who made his debut at SuperSport Park, nor for Dane Paterson in their stadium, while Tony de Zorzi is ruled out due to a strain in his left thigh. Ryan Rickelton will open with Aiden Markram and Mulder moved to number 3, ahead of Tristan Stubbs.

Pakistan’s XI was confirmed on Friday morning and they have opted for a specialist spinner as Salman Agha and, to a lesser extent, Saim Ayub are expected to carry that load. Agha did not bowl at SuperSport Park but said in the run-up to this match that he hoped to get more opportunities here. His only change was forced by injury. Naseem Shah is out with back stiffness and Mir Hamza has been included.

The first and second day at Newlands are full and large crowds are expected in support of South Africa following their qualification for the World Test Championship final.
