- Samsung Bespoke refrigerators add artificial intelligence
- You will look inside your refrigerator and analyze your grocery needs.
- Instacart will receive the order
Samsung wants your refrigerator to take care of your shopping with a little help from Instacart. Samsung and Instacart are teaming up for same-day grocery delivery based on what the AI in Samsung Bespoke refrigerators sees you already have. In other words, your refrigerator could detect when you’re running low on milk and add a box to your Instacart order before you know it.
Samsung’s AI Vision Inside technology keeps track of what’s in your refrigerator using internal cameras. Combined with Instacart’s product matching system, it can suggest what you need to restock and allow you to place an order with a few taps. You can browse your shopping list right on the refrigerator’s touch screen and receive items the same day.
Forgot to add eggs to the list? It’s not a problem. Your refrigerator has your breakfast organized. Instead of frantically going shopping late at night, your refrigerator lets you know that you’ve already added everything you need to the list. The Instacart link will be available on new Bespoke refrigerators and will be added to existing ones via an over-the-air firmware update.
AI Grocery Stores
You’ll still need to approve actual purchases of the items the AI adds to your list. No matter how good the AI is, you don’t want to give it too much control lest it mistake your cauliflower for cabbage and order the wrong vegetable. Plus, there are millions of types of milk and you don’t want to upset anyone in your family who expects oat milk but only gets almond milk.
One aspect not mentioned is that the AI could learn your eating habits and possibly become more proactive in creating your shopping list. The companies haven’t mentioned any plans to collect or analyze that kind of data, but it wouldn’t be too far off from how we all see targeted ads based on our Internet searches. Except in this case it would be based on what you had for dinner.
Still, there’s no denying the potential, especially if Samsung and Instacart can pull it off without your refrigerator looking like it’s judging you.
As competitors like Amazon and Google also push deeper into the smart home market, Samsung’s Instacart partnership could give it an advantage. By combining practicality with a touch of futuristic style, they are setting a high bar for what smart appliances can do. People are hungry for convenience, and Instacart and Samsung are happy to provide it.
