LAHORE:
The PML-N candidate, Rana Sanaullah, was elected Punjab senator in a partial election on Tuesday, ensuring 250 votes.
According to the official results, a total of 251 ballots of the polls were recovered, of which 250 were declared valid while one was rejected.
In reaction to the victory of Sanaullah, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the leader of Senior PML-N and extended his best wishes, expressing his confidence that the newly chosen senator would play an active role in the effective legislation in the upper house.
“Senators have an important role in strengthening the Federation and defending democratic values,” said Prime Minister in a statement, added that the Senate elections reflected the continuity of the democratic process.
The contest was largely unilateral after PTI boycotted the electoral process, making it clear that any member who participated in the vote would challenge the party’s policy.
However, the opposition presented Salma Ijaz, wife of Ejaz Chaudhry. The seat had fallen vacant after the disqualification of PTI ejaz chaudhry leader, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an anti -terrorism court in cases linked to the disturbances of May 9.
