Sanctions, fines cannot prevent transporters from being overloaded

As millions of people across the country take trips by bus to spend EID with loved ones in cities of origin, transporters walk the rates at the ages of the old excuse ‘Wapsi Pur Bus Khald Aati Helo’ or the bus is empty on the return trip.

The city administration has received complaints about rates overload at RS1,000 to RS2,000. The rate for Quetta, which was previously RS4,500, is now charged at RS6,500.

A passenger said that the rate for Kot Addu, in southern Punjab, was 3,400 rupees, a few weeks ago, but as the EID approached, transporters have increased to RS5,200.

Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, ordered DCS to undertake legal measures against bus operators who charged passengers more, impose fines and reimbursed excess tariff.

DC EAST ABRAR JAFFAR reported that the rates were verified in 213 buses in Karachi Toll Plaza, and a total of RS613,000 were reimbursed to passengers who were overloaded. The Challans issued 87 buses per overload and fines of RS293,000 were imposed.

While in the Karachi bus terminal, Superhubas rates were verified in 151 buses and excess rates worth RS275,000 was reimbursed to passengers. In the Punjab terminal, the rates were verified in 171 buses and RS378,500 were reimbursed to passengers.

Meanwhile, the National Roads and Highway Police (South Zone, Karachi) so far has forced bus operators to reimburse more than 900,000 rates excessively to passengers. In addition, bus operators involved in rates violations have been fined with RS800,000, according to Dig Motorway Asghar Ali Yousafzai police.
