- Sandisk plans 256TB and 512TB SSDS using a new Stargate controller
- Stargate will debut in business units that will be launched at the end of 2025
- Company’s income after WD Split, but the road map is still very ambitious
Sandisk, which now works independently as a SSD and Nand Flash manufacturer after its separation from Western Digital last year, has caused a new SSD controller called “Stargate”, designed to admit large capacity business units.
Stargate, who confused his name with the OpenAI Stargate project, but obviously has nothing to do with him, is part of the “Ultra Qlc” platform of Sandisk, which aims to climb SSD’s capabilities in the coming years.
During his earning call, the CEO of Sandisk, David Goeckeler, said: “We have a new architecture that will be in the next quarters that we call Stargate, a new ASIC leaf design, clean, and then with BICS 8 QLC … we simply believe it will be a dynamite project.”
1PB SSD incoming
Goeckeler did not share more technical details, but Stargate is expected to debut in business units such as the SN670 series.
That line is scheduled for its launch in the third quarter of 2025 with capacities of 64 TB and 128TB, BICS8 QLC (2Tbit/256GB per dice) and PCIE 5.0 support.
Future versions may include PCIE 6.0 as capacity objectives increase. Sandisk’s roadmap shows 256TB by 2026, followed by 512TB in 2027, with a 1PB target further. Stargate is likely to play a central role in the qualification of those jumps.
Sandisk’s third quarter of the fiscal year 2025 was also the first as an independent company. He reported $ 1,695 billion in revenue, a 10 percent decrease from the previous quarter and a net loss of $ 1,881 billion, largely due to a goodwill disability of $ 1.83 billion.
Sandisk’s strongest segment was the client’s SSD, which brought $ 927 million, followed by $ 571 million of consumer products and $ 197 million of the Cloud division.
