Schools operate in risky buildings

VEHARI:

The deteriorated buildings of a large number of private educational institutions have become a threat to children’s lives, causing consternation among parents.

A local merchant, Rehman Malik, whose children study in a private school, said the building was in such a poor condition that there was a constant risk of a great accident.

He declared: “We have repeatedly informed the school administration about the dangerous state of the building, but they are not taking the matter seriously.”

Another resident, Muhammad Shehzad, a property merchant, also expressed concern about the subject. He said: “Ancient and weak buildings of private schools can cause a tragedy at any time, however, the authorities in question remain silent spectators. We cannot risk the life of our children.”

The parents said that the provincial government should take measures against private schools that violated the relevant rules to avoid any loss.

Meanwhile, an engineering firm authorized by the Punjab government to inspect the buildings of private schools has sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Vehari, asking for an investigation into the alleged issuance of physical conditioning certificates of false buildings to hundreds of schools in the district.

The company declared that it had issued around 450 physical conditioning certificates for academic year 2024-25, while more than 1,800 private schools were registered in the portal of the Department of School Education.

A spokesman for the attached commissioner declared that the official had taken immediate measures in the letter and sent the matter to the Department of Education to guarantee transparent investigation into the matter.
