Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that the provincial government will mark Pakistan’s independence day with the “national zeal and unity”, with the greatest celebration scheduled for the Karachi National Stadium on August 13.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the stadium to inspect the arrangements on Sunday, Memon said the 27,000 seats for the event had already been registered. He added that festivities are planned throughout Sindh, with great events held in Hyderabad and another programmed in Sukkur.

Memon pointed to the Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), accusing the party of trying to “cause damage to the country” by asking for protests in Yom-E-Instehsal Kashmir (Kashmir Day). He compared his position towards the disturbances of May 9 and urged all political parties to “put aside their differences” for national holidays.

“Independence Day is a program for every Pakistan, not only for the Government or the PPP,” he said.

Highlighting the historical role of Sindh in the creation of Pakistan, Memon pointed out that Sindh’s assembly first approved the resolution for the formation of the country. He said that the provincial government has formed a ministerial committee, including representatives of several political and religious parties, to guarantee broad participation in the celebrations.

Memon was accompanied by the local government minister, Saeed Ghani, the mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab and other officials during the visit to the stadium.
