
The new general secretary of the Commonwealth has expressed his true feelings after the first hearing with King Charles, who is the chief of the Commonwealth.
The palace shared a photo of King Charles with Shirley Botchwey following the audience with the monarch in X, previously Twitter Handle and said: “The king, as head of the Commonwealth, received the Hon. Shirley Botchwey in his appointment as the new general secretary of the Commonwealth in Windsor’s castle this morning.”
When commenting on it, Shirley Botchwey said: “Today I had the honor of my first audience with his Majestad Rey Carlos III, head of the Commonwealth.
“We share our vision and aspirations for the continuous success of the Commonwealth.”
She added: “I hope to work with her majesty to strengthen ties within our family of nations.”

Shirley Botchwey was appointed by the Chiefs of Government of the Commonwealth at its Biennial Meeting in Apia, Samoa in 2024.
He assumed the position on April 1, 2025, and promised to advance in the values of the Commonwealth Charter at a time of growing global tensions and changing alliances.
